Αφιέρωμα στον Syd Barrett: Οι στίχοι θεωρούνται ευρέως ως φόρος τιμής στον πρώην σύντροφο των Pink Floyd Syd Barrett, ο οποίος είχε αποχωρήσει από το γκρουπ λίγα χρόνια νωρίτερα λόγω αγώνων ψυχικής υγείας.
Η μουσική για το "Wish You Were Here" γράφτηκε από τον David Gilmour και από τον Roger Waters, τον κιθαρίστα και τον μπασίστα του συγκροτήματος αντίστοιχα. Ο Gilmour τραγουδά επίσης βασικά φωνητικά στο κομμάτι.
